At 1:00am on July 10, 2023, the brick building of the historic Broad Street market caught fire and was almost totally destroyed. The market was built in 1860 and has been a landmark of the city ever since. The building that burned housed produce, meat, fish, bakeries and a plethora of other items mostly run by Amish and Mennonite farmers. This is such a tragedy for them and their livelihood. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the kudos to the firemen who kept the fire from spreading to the apartment community on the one side and the Millworks artist residence & restaurant on the other. The mayor has sworn to rebuild it. In these photos I tried to capture some of the human element in the aftermath of the blaze.
