Bruce Gilden photographs New York mayoral candidates
A piece on Intelligencer, from New York magazine, recently profiled the individuals standing for the position of mayor in New York. Bruce Gilden took portraits of each candidate and his images illustrate the piece. The feature came prior to the primary elections this week, which utilized a five-ranked voting system for the first time ever. See Gilden’s images on the magazine here.
Alex Webb photographs ‘young Hollywood’ wearing Gucci
A recent series on Cultured mag profiled eight up-and-coming figures in the film industry, from actor Alex Wolff to director and writer Gia Coppola. The individuals, styled in Gucci clothing, were photographed by Magnum photographer Alex Webb. Webb’s images appear in an eight-page spread and on the cover of the print magazine. Paolo Pellegrin in Internazionale
Italian weekly Internazionale has published images by Paolo Pellegrin from his assignment following the Covid boats in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Sicily. The operation led by Italy’s government, to charter former cruise ships as holding-places for migrants seeking to enter Europe, was purported contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Rafal Milach in Le Monde magazine
Last weekend Le Monde’s weekend supplement, M, dedicated an 8-page spread to images from Rafal Milach’s new 3-part book, I’m Warning You. The project explores the workings, and architectural significances, of border walls in Hungary, America, and Berlin. Carolyn Drake selected for award by Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson
The winner of the twelfth Prix HCB, the annual recognition awarded by the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, has been announced as Carolyn Drake. Drake received the award for her project Centaur (working title). Read more in the announcement here.
Lua Ribeira and Martin Parr Foundation show work at Bristol Photo Festival
A new exhibition at Bristol Museum, part of the Bristol Photo Festival, sees Lua Ribeira’s work displayed alongside artworks from the museum’s collections. Consisting of Ribeira’s images made from various series in Cordoba and Melilla, in Spain, Tijuana in Mexico, and Bristol itself, the show aims to question the role images play within the social construction of groups and categories. Meanwhile, also in the museum, the Martin Parr Foundation shows images by over 60 photographers from its collection, exploring life in Britain during the post-war years. Find more information about the show here.
Chris Steele-Perkins’ Ireland Book in The Times
A new book by Chris Steele-Perkins collects his images of Belfast in 1978. When he began work on the project, the photographer revisited his contact sheets and rediscovered 38 images from his archives. These are included in the book and have never previously been published. Martin Parr’s Ireland exhibition comes to Dublin
Ahead of Martin Parr’s Ireland show opening in Dublin, the Irish Independent has reviewed the work. The exhibition collects photographs the photographer has made over 40 years in the country. David Hurn’s image in The Guardian’s ‘big picture’
The Guardian’s regular ‘big picture’ feature, unpacking one classic photograph a week, has shared the story of David Hurn’s image of revellers at a music festival on the Isle of Wight. Sporting the headline ‘Sun’s out, bums out’, the piece describes Hurn’s career and interest in photographing music-lovers. Read it here.
