Magnum Events and Exhibitions During Paris Photo 2023
A round-up of where to be and what to see in November as Magnum photographers land in the capital for Paris Photo.
The 26th edition of the largest international art fair dedicated to photography, Paris Photo, takes place at the Grand Palais Éphémère from November 9 to 12. Every November, as photographers, galleries, artists and photo enthusiasts from around the world gather in the French capital, there is a flurry of photography-related events and activities across the city. This year is no different, and as the fair approaches, we take a look at several of the key events and exhibitions featuring Magnum photographers in the coming month.
From Myriam Boulos’ first solo show in France at Galerie Madé to the largest-ever book fair at the Magnum Gallery on Saturday, November 11 (in the presence of Steve McCurry, Raymond Depardon, Harry Gruyaert, and many others), many of the events are open to the public and free to attend.

In this year’s curation for Paris Photo, classic meets contemporary and black-and-white meets vivid color as we travel through the generations of Magnum photographers. The booth features the work of Mikhael Subotzky, Herbert List, Patrick Zachmann, Raymond Depardon, Chris Killip, Gregory Halpern, Alex Webb, Harry Gruyaert, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Werner Bischof, Bieke Depoorter, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Myriam Boulos, Carolyn Drake, Cristina de Middel and Matt Black — whose series Artifacts will premiere at the fair.

Events at the Paris Photo Fair
Photographers Myriam Boulos and Bieke Depoorter star in this year’s Parcours Elles, curated by Fiona Rogers. Rogers has designed a path around the fair’s many booths to spotlight 38 artists who are using their personal experiences to tell a wider story — both contemporary and historical. On Friday, November 10 at 3:30 p.m., Boulos will be in Hoda Afshar and Yelena Yemchuk for the Elles x Paris Photos Talk, moderated by Rogers.
On the same day, at 3 p.m., Susan Meiselas will host a conversation with Alex Haas about the new book by Inge Bondi, Ernst Haas: Letters & Stories, published by Damiani.
And, Lúa Ribeira’s Subida al Cielo has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture First Photobook Award. Winners will be announced at the fair on Friday, November 10, at 3 p.m.

Magnum Stand
Bateau Concorde-Atlantique – Berges de Seine
November 8–12
For the first time, in parallel to the booth at Paris Photo, Magnum will also host a stand at Polycopies, the annual photobook fair located on the Concorde-Atlantique boat on the river Seine. Alongside a community of international book publishers and sellers, Magnum’s stand will present a large selection of old, rare, and limited-edition releases dating back to the early years of the Magnum archive, as well as brand-new releases from the likes of Jim Goldberg, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Carolyn Drake, and many more.
A number of book signings will also take place throughout the week. On Friday, November 10, Martin Parr will be signing books at 4 p.m., followed by Susan Meiselas at 5:30 p.m. and Emin Özmen, who will be signing copies of his groundbreaking first photobook Olay, at 6 p.m.

Exhibitions
Alessandra Sanguinetti, Some Say Ice
November 6–December 23

Opening on the evening of November 6 at the Magnum Gallery in Paris is Some Say Ice, an exhibition featuring over 25 works from Sanguinetti’s remarkable fifth book, published in November of last year. The book — and now the exhibition — presents an immersive journey into Sanguinetti’s eerie and timeless depiction of Black River Falls, a small town in Wisconsin.
The exhibition opening takes place on Monday, November 6 from 7 p.m., and the Gallery will be open from 10 a.m. til 7 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. For those unable to visit during the week itself, the exhibition runs until December 23. Plan your visit here.
Myriam Boulos, What’s Ours

November 2–December 22
In collaboration with the Magnum Gallery, Boulos’ first solo show in France opens in the run-up to Paris Photo at Galerie Madé, located just between the Pont des Arts and the Pont Neuf on the left bank. The exhibition draws upon work from her debut monograph, What’s Ours, which presents a personal and intimate exploration of pleasure and protest in the photographer’s hometown of Beirut, a project that she started at the beginning of the revolution in 2019.

Winner of the HCB Award in 2021, Drake’s series MEN UNTITLED shifts her gaze to her relationship with myths of masculinity in American culture. The series follows on from Knit Club, published in 2020, which followed a community of women living in a small town in Mississippi.
In the exhibition, Drake combines a series of images that invite viewers to look closely at male bodies, and how they appear in front of the camera, with reflection on her relationship to men.

Events
On Saturday, November 11, a full day of free talks and signings will take place at the Magnum Gallery. 10 photographers will be present throughout the day, making it the largest Magnum book event in Paris to date.
Steve McCurry, Stuart Franklin, Carolyn Drake, Richard Kalvar and Myriam Boulos will each present their latest photobooks. ‘In Conversation’ sessions will take place between Raymond Depardon, Antoine d’Agata and Philippe Séclier, as well as William Keo and editor Yegan Mazandarani. Harry Gruyaert will present his short film Sense of Place to introduce his upcoming release, Morocco. Each photographer will be available for a signing following their talk.

A Conversation with Bruce Gilden and Martin Parr
Thursday, November 9
Silencio des Prés, Paris 75006
Silencio’s restaurant and exclusive contemporary space in Saint Germain des Prés opens its doors to Gilden and Parr on Thursday evening for a conversation between the two photographers. Gilden will be signing copies of Haiti and Cherry Blossom following the talk.
Workshops
Join Carolyn Drake, Peter van Agtmael and William Keo for a three-day workshop on how to publish a photography project. Designed for budding and experienced photographers alike, the course will focus on demystifying the photography industry and will share the knowledge needed to turn a personal project into professional practice. Each participant will also take part in portfolio reviews to receive feedback and guidance on their work.
The three Magnum photographers will be joined by a host of professionals from the industry — picture editors, artistic directors, book publishers and a Magnum partnership manager — to cover numerous aspects of the photography business.
